Coping with Stress – Is stress getting in the way of achieving your best health? By Naturopath Rebecca Screen

The body’s stress response is designed to help you survive stressful situations.  However, modern life stress can be persistent and more than what our body can manage.  You are exposed to some sort of stress every day.  Whether it be waking up to an alarm, driving in peak hour traffic, paying an unexpected bill, working, meeting deadlines, relationship troubles – all of these can take their toll.  Sometimes it can be so overwhelming, it feels like it is taking over your life and you have lost control.  Stresses may not always be short lived or easy to resolve.  So, your stress response or nervous system is constantly activated or what I call – “switched on.”  Without the adequate recovery from stress, the first signs you may see include:

  • Energy changes
  • Muscle tension
  • Sweating
  • Poor digestion
  • Increased heart rate
  • Sleep disturbances

You start to feel tired, notice changes in your mood or sleep.  This stress or change in how you feel, may now be your ‘normal’ day to day existence.  The body is so fatigued, it feels like it is being dragged through the motions because ‘stuff’ just has to get done.  A response to this is for the brain to send a signal to the adrenal glands to release cortisol.  Which helps to keep you going and push you through.

Stress is known to be an underlying factor behind many health conditions.  Over time this can lead to exhaustion, insomnia, hormonal imbalances, chronic fatigue, depression, anxiety and more.

Are you struggling with juggling many commitments, with the ‘to-do’ list continuing to grow?  Leaving little time for self-care, rest and relaxation to de-stress.  It doesn’t have to be this way!
